Board of Regents – Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys

NBTA Board Certified In Truck Accident Law

Founder of the CTLA Truck Safety Committee

Peter M. Anderson

Peter M. Anderson is a Colorado truck accident attorney with more than 20 years’ experience helping injured people get back on their feet. His office is in Boulder County, Colorado. Admitted to the Colorado Bar in 2001, Peter M. Anderson is licensed to practice in the U.S. District Court of the District of Colorado and in the 10th Circuit of the U.S. Supreme Court. He also received a Certificate of Good Standing from the clerk of the Supreme Court of the State of Colorado.

Making a difference in Colorado, Peter is the founder of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association’s Truck Safety Committee and is NBTA Board Certified in Truck Accident Law – making him one of a select few in the state of Colorado. He earned the “Advocate Diploma” with the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Attorney Anderson is one of the few attorneys in Boulder to graduate from the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Peter is also a 2011 graduate of William “Bill” Barton’s Litigation Boot Camp.

As of 2005, Peter was named the Colorado Bar Association’s Young Lawyer of the Year. He later went on to become a board member of the CTLA (past) and co-chair of the civil litigation and medical/legal section of the BCBA (past). He has been a guest lecturer in Colorado, and from Idaho to Florida, while also authoring articles for local and national legal publications. Peter is a member of the American Bar Association, Colorado Bar Association (CBA), Boulder County Bar Association (BCBA), Colorado Trial Lawyers Association (CTLA) and Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys (AATA).

Peter’s work history

Peter’s first career was as an insurance claims manager; as a claims adjuster and a claims manager, he utilized claims assessment software in evaluating and assessing personal injury claims. He negotiated settlements with plaintiffs’ attorneys, directed defense counsel on litigation matters and controlled comprehensive discovery investigations. Through this experience, Peter gained an in-depth working knowledge of how insurance companies adjust claims, and the right and wrong way to evaluate a claim.

Working for the eighth largest law firm in Boston provided invaluable perspectives on how insurance defense lawyers defend cases. While a law clerk with Morrison, Mahoney & Miller, Peter worked closely with insurance defense counsel and insurance claims personnel in defending product liability cases. During his tenure at this prestigious insurance defense firm, Peter composed memos of law assessing the discovery of facts, evaluated strategies of plaintiff’s counsel, developed litigation/discovery tactics, and analyzed trial exhibits. This experience gave Peter an insider’s perspective on how the top Boston insurance defense lawyers defend personal injury cases. Peter’s background also consists of a strong working knowledge of municipality law as he interned with the City of Boston Law Department. He composed and answered Freedom of Information Act requests as well as written discovery.

Personal background

Many people assume that successful plaintiff personal injury lawyers come from privileged lives. That is seldom the case. Many of the top plaintiff lawyers in the country had a regular upbringing, and have struggled to obtain the American dream. Boulder truck accident attorney Peter M. Anderson’s background helps him understand much of his clients’ experience.

Peter was born to young parents in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. His father was a Scottish immigrant, while his mother hailed from humble beginnings outside of Toronto. Growing up in Canada with his brother and parents, Peter spent his days playing street/pond hockey with friends. His father was a salesman for a local tape cassette company; his mother stayed home to care for the family. Dissatisfied with the opportunities in Canada and poor living accommodations, Peter’s father packed up the family and moved to the U.S. – the first of his family to do so. Jobs were scarce, but Peter’s father found a new sales position to make ends meet. After moving from apartment to apartment, the family finally found a home in Pennsylvania.

Although his parents never graduated from high school, Peter decided to pursue higher education; every weekend he would find odd jobs, from landscaping and painting to golf caddying, to make enough money to attend college. Peter attended West Chester University in Pennsylvania, where he obtained two college degrees while playing competitive hockey. He paid for his own tuition through student loans and holding down odd jobs, serving as a waiter, working in the dining halls and lifeguarding on the Cape May Beach Patrol in New Jersey.

After graduation, Peter embarked on his first career in sales, working for Internet Securities. He worked in Manhattan, New York, and then opened a satellite office in Washington, D.C., where he sold emerging market intelligence until the company centralized its business in Boston, where he relocated. In 1997, Peter decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a Boulder personal injury lawyer; he would be the first lawyer in his family. He was a bit older than the other applicants, many of whom were fresh out of college. But he persisted nevertheless, working days as a claims adjuster at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and at an insurance defense firm Morrison Mahoney & Miller to pay his tuition for law school. He spent four arduous years working during the day; at night, he attended Boston-based New England School of Law (NESL), where he served as class president for all four years (and playing on the NESL club hockey team).

Upon graduation, Peter decided move to Colorado. He passed the bar exam in 2001, a few months out of law school. His mother was able to visit Colorado to see her son sworn into the bar, passing away the next month on Thanksgiving due to lung cancer.

Peter started his own practice in 2001, as a lawyer specializing in personal injury, with a sub-specialty in cases involving semi trucks and big rigs. More than 20 years later, Peter has helped hundreds of clients through challenging personal injury claims or insurance bad faith issues. Peter has distinguished himself as a truck accident attorney who is a true trial lawyer; he has tried multiple cases before a jury nearly every year of his practice, with a 95% success rate. Nearly all of his cases have resulted in six- and seven-figure verdicts or settlements.

In 2005, Peter finally became an American citizen, taking written and oral exams, fingerprints and background checks to finally stake his claim in the U.S. — and today, he is proudly living the American dream. Colorado truck accident attorney Peter M. Anderson maintains a very busy law practice with the help of fellow truck accident attorney, Carlo Bonavita, as well as a dedicated paralegal staff. He continues to hone his trial advocacy skills; he has been hand-picked to attend several prestigious training programs for personal injury trial lawyers. He is a frequent lecturer at both legal and chiropractic conferences across the country.

When he is not actively engaged in trial work, Peter can be found on a farmette in the Hygiene section of Longmont, Colorado. You may find him on a John Deere tractor mowing the lawns or maintaining the fence lines. He has been happily married for over 25 years; he and his wife love spending time with family and friends. For entertainment, he races dirt bikes in the Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuit and Colorado Off-Road Championship Series (CORCS), Wyoming Off-Road Racers Association (WORRA), Rocky Mountain Riders Association (RMRA) and trains with dirt bike specialist Steve Hatch Racing.
